New Post Construction Up-Date

As of: 20-July-08

Construction continues at what appears a snail's pace. But, at least we are progressing even with a very limited number of volunteers. It now appears that we will not be able to open by Labor Day. A more realistic goal will be a "Soft Opening" for Wavefest (Sept. 27 &28).
A drive-by on Waveland Avenue and you can see the new facade facing Waveland Ave. We have dressed up the front considerably, as required by city building codes.
So, if you find yourself in the area, and see open doors - stop by and see your new post. You should be pleased.

AUXILIARY ANNOUNCEMENT:  Linda Rollins, President (July 19, 2008)
"We the members of Bourgeois-Stieffel-Ray American Legion Auxiliary Unit 77 appreciate the dedicaton and hard work of the Legionnaires of Post 77. Therefore, we do hereby pledge the sum of Three Hundred Dollars ($300) to reimburse the Legionnaires of Post 77 for the recent acquisition of pedestal sinks for our new Post Home.
We do hereby further pledge the sum of Ten Thousand Dollars ($10,000) to reimburse the Legionnaires for the recent purchase of the kitchen appliances totaling approximately Eight Thousand Five Hundred Dollars ($8,500) with Fifteen Hundred Dollars ($1,500) added for good measure."

(Note: Exerpts from a Unit 77 Letter)
Dear Members, Family, and Guests:
Unit 77 is requesting your help in furnishing the new Post. Help is needed to furnish the main hall with tables and chairs. We are asking all to participate by donating a table for $100.00. Your $100.00 donation will purchase an 8-foot table with your personal plaque.
Unit 77 is currently taking orders by contacting Elsie Otnott (228-467-8292) or Diane Fountain (228-467-2198). Elsie or Diane will be more than happy to explain the program to you, so please call.
Donations of less than $100.00 will be graciously accepted and used to buy the chairs and smaller tables (sans plaque, of course).

Successful Installation

Our FY 2009 Officer Installation at VFW Post 3253 was enjoyed by the 60-plus members and guests. Officers were installed by the Department Commander Steve Sweet and Past Department President Janet Aime. Representation from Department, District and Posts 24, 119, and 139 (my apologies if I skipped any Posts) were in attendence demonstrating the growing solidarity within the 9th District and its relationship with the Department. Representing the VFW was Commander Gene Schloegel of VFW Post 3253.
Auxiliary Historian Jackie Sibley was recognized by Commander Voorhies for all the time and effort she put forth in maintaining the historical record of the Post by creating a Post yearbook. The yearbook , filled with pictures and activities of this past year, will be on display when the Post is opened.
A special thanks goes out to the Auxiliary for preparing and donating all the delicious food for our installation. Our Auxiliary continues to play a vital role in the success of the Post.
Commander Voorhies stated his last years motto, "BUILD THE POST", is nearly fulfilled. With 90% (est.) of the construction completed. He then announced this year's motto, "GET 'ER DONE"!
Officers for FY 2009 are listed in the Officer Section of this blog.

RAYMOND CUEVAS RECEIVES "BLUE CAP" AWARD

WAVELAND (July 12, 2008) – RAYMOND A. CUEVAS of American Legion MS Post #77 received the distinguished “BLUE CAP” Award by the American Legion Department of Mississippi. This award was presented by Department of Mississippi Commander Joe Kersh at the 90th Convention of the State of Mississippi American Legion in Vicksburg, MS this past weekend.

This award is presented only when a single legionnaire statewide has demonstrated the highest dedication to volunteerism, surpassing all others, in serving the American Legion.

Past Commander Cuevas has demonstrated this dedication to the Post and The American Legion by his service over the past almost three (3) years since Hurricane Katrina.

He has almost single-handedly held his Post together since the storm. He was the first on the scene to “save” as much of the Post records as possible. He recovered the Post safe containing over Six Thousand Dollars ($6,000.00). The safe was found and recovered weeks after the storm, and when opened, it was filled with “Gumbo Mud”. The bank bags were coated and filled with mud, making the money useless in its current state. Then Commander Cuevas, along with his wife, took the money home and began the tedious task of literally “laundering the money”. Painstakingly, over a period of weeks into months, he and his wife opened the bank bags, washed and separated the money, washed again and sun-dried the money in their back yard. Those bills, which contained the required and readable serial numbers, were then taken to a local bank and the Post account was credited. Over Six-Thousand Dollars ($6,000.00) were recovered in this manner. (You may get an idea of just how difficult the task was by Google Searching, “Raymond Cuevas”, then clicking on, “Rising from Ruin”.

He then secured a fabric Quonset hut from the City of Waveland and began to conduct Legion meetings with the few survivors of the storm who remained or came back into the area. He refused to see the post be lost to the effects of “Katrina”. Then, recognizing that the proposed Corps of Engineers Flood levels would make it impossible to rebuild the Post on its current site, he began the search for a new Post site. After an extensive search of the local area, a new site was found and purchased through Executive Committee approval.

He has served as the Post Commander for three consecutive years, three of the hardest years for a Commander. It demanded excessive time, effort and coordination – a daunting task to say the least.

Now, as Past Commander Cuevas, he has accepted the appointment of the current Commander and approval of the Executive Committee to act as the “Ramrod” for the construction of the new Post. This project was started last summer and continues to this day at 503 Waveland Ave. in Waveland. It requires Past Commander Cuevas to be available on an almost daily basis to make decisions relevant to the successful construction of the Post. He and Bill Sibley (the Master Planner and fellow Legionnaire) are coordinating to see that the Post reach its target date for an Opening during Wavefest 2008 in the latter part of September.

Simply put, if it had not been for the extraordinary efforts of this man, The American Legion Mississippi Post #77 of Waveland would simply not exist today. The Executive Committee and all members of the Post are extremely grateful for his dedication to his Post and The American Legion. We extend our congratulations to Past Commander Raymond A. Cuevas on his selection for the prestigious “BLUE CAP” Award.

MS Post 77 has Logo (New)

(sorry, but I'm unable to get a clearer picture)
Post 77 has adopted a new logo. As far as I know, we are the first and only Post in the State of Mississippi to "sport" its own logo. The logo is a 1-inch legion cap pin / tie-tack / lapel pin, etc. The cost is $6.00 for the first 100 sold and may be ordered at any meeting or by contacting 1st Vice Commander  Richard Powers (email: immortal1978@yahoo.com or 228-365-7156).  They are already going fast and re-orders may be necessary - so don't delay.
Initial Order of 100 -
SOLD OUT

Your new Executive Committee will take up the re-order issue at the next meeting.
